Itinerary

DAY 1 USA / NAPLES: Depart from Chicago on your overnight flight to Naples, Italy.

DAY 2 ARRIVE NAPLES / SORRENTO: Upon arrival in Naples airport, we are met by our tour escort and transferred to your hotel in Sorrento. Enjoy an orientation walking tour of Sorrento with a visit to a Limoncello shop for a taste of this traditional liqueur. Afterwards, we enjoy time to relax, rest, or explore. Tonight, enjoy a welcome Dinner at a local restaurant. (D)

DAY 3 THE AMALFI COAST BY BOAT: This morning after breakfast, we depart and transfer to the port. Today we will enjoy a private group cruise along the Amalfi Coast. We visit the coastal towns of Amalfi and Positano and enjoy some free time in both towns to explore at our own pace. Arrive in Positano where we will have free time to visit this picturesque village. Enjoy a light lunch at a local restaurant before boarding the boat and continuing towards Amalfi. Stop at Conca dei Marini where we will visit “Grotta dello Smeraldo – the Emerald Cave”. Discovered in 1932 by a local fisherman, this marine cave is known for the turquoise water that fills the cavern with an emerald-green light when the sun’s rays filter up through a fissure beneath its surface. It’s covered with limestone stalagmites and stalactites more commonly associated with inland karstic caves. Afterwards, we cruise on to the beautiful town of Amalfi. The town after which this stretch of coastline has been named, Amalfi, is situated below steep cliffs. It is known for its outstanding medieval architecture, including the 11th century Cathedral of Sant’ Andrea. Enjoy some free time to explore at your own pace. Later, we return to Sorrento by coach, where our evening is free. DAY 4 FONDO GALATEA: After breakfast, we depart and make our way to Agriturismo “Fondo Galatea”, a Farmhouse in the Sorrento area. Upon arrival, a member of the family that owns the farmhouse will welcome us in a typical Sorrentine courtyard for a brief presentation. Then, we’ll visit the olive oil mill, the cellar, and the house with the explanation of the production process of oil and wine, and mozzarella making demonstration. On the terrace, enjoy tasting of all the local products: salami, mozzarella cheese, olives, bruschetta, croutons with extra-virgin oil and wine. After the tasting, the cooking class will start. We learn how to prepare the famous “gnocchi”, chicken chasseur, and jam tart. Then enjoy lunch with wine and limoncello! Afterwards, return to Sorrento where the remainder of our day is free. (B/L)

DAY 5 EXCURSION TO CAPRI: This morning we head to Capri, the world’s most enchanting island. Enjoy a full-day guided tour of Capri Island. Transfer to the port of Sorrento, catch a hydrofoil to reach the magical and colorful island, which has been a favorite resort destination since the time of the Roman Republic. Enjoy a tour of the Island by minibus. Visit the lovely Anacapri and explore the charming shops and chic boutiques in the narrow streets. Continue to see “La Piazzetta,” the social heart of the island, on your way to the open-air Gardens of Augustus, from where you will appreciate breath-taking views of the famous Faraglioni rocks. Later, return to Sorrento where your evening is free. (B)

DAY 6 SORRENTO AT LEISURE: Enjoy breakfast followed by a full day at leisure in Sorrento. Tonight, we to say goodbye to the Amalfi Coast with an unforgettable Dinner Musical Tarantella Show inspired to traditional Sorrento dance of Tarantella. Afterwards, we return to our hotel for overnight. (B/D)

DAY 7 SORRENTO / POMPEII / ROME: After breakfast, we depart for Rome. We stop in Pompeii to visit the archaeological excavations. Enjoy a guided visit of the best-preserved Roman city ruins, including the Temples of Apollo, Jupiter and the Forum. Vesuvius erupted and buried the city under a blanket of ash six meters deep. After our visit, we enjoy a lunch of Real Neapolitan Pizza with Buffalo Mozzarella and fresh tomatoes. Afterwards, travel via Naples where we enjoy a brief panoramic drive. Have your cameras ready because we will arrive in Naples via Vomero Hill overlooking the sapphire Bay of Naples, Capri, Ischia and proud Vesuvius. Onward to Rome where after checking in to our hotel we enjoy dinner in a local restaurant. (B/L/D)

DAY 8 IMPERIAL ROME: After breakfast at the hotel, today we take a morning excursion to see the classic monuments of the Ancient Rome. From the Forum, where the destinies of the world were decided, to the Coliseum, where we will hear of performances of wild animals and gladiators and spectators’ reactions. A picture with one of the gladiators located outside the Coliseum will be an unforgettable souvenir of your “Roman Holidays”. Afterwards, enjoy your afternoon and evening at leisure to explore Rome independently and at your own pace. (B)

DAY 9 THE VATICAN & ROMAN SQUARES: This morning, it’s a 10-minute drive to another country – The Vatican City! With our expert local guide, we’ll tour the Vatican Museums, a treasure trove of ancient Greek sculptures, medieval tapestries and Renaissance paintings. Our visit culminates in the Sistine Chapel, the room where the Pope is elected. Next, we visit St. Peter’s Basilica, by far the largest church in Christendom. We’ll see Michelangelo’s Pieta, sculpted when he was just 24, as well as Bernini’s seven-story bronze canopy located above the main altar. Afterwards, enjoy free time for lunch before departing on a guided walking tour through the Roman Squares. Starting from the Spanish Steps, we’ll walk around Rome’s fountains and squares and see sculptures, architecture and paintings from the baroque era. See the world-famous Trevi Fountain, a magnificent example of baroque art. Its dramatic, natural lines and fantastical creatures embody movement and inspire a sense of triumph. Tradition says that if you throw a coin over your shoulder into the fountain, then you will eventually return to Rome. Toss in a penny and cross your fingers! Next, we visit the Pantheon (meaning temple of ‘all the gods’), which was originally built as a temple to the seven deities in the state religion of Ancient Rome. The Pantheon is the biggest brick dome in the history of architecture and is considered the forerunner of all modern places of worship. It is the most copied and imitated of all ancient works. Last stop will be the magnificent Piazza Navona, known for its two highlights, the Fontana dei Quattro Fiumi (Fountain of the Four Rivers) by Bernini and Sant’Agnese in Agone church by Borromini. Return to our hotel to freshen up, and then take a short walk to a local restaurant where we enjoy a farewell dinner. (B/D)

DAY 10 ROME / USA: Arrivederci! After breakfast, we will take our private transfer to Rome airport for our return flight to the USA, arriving home the same day. (B)
